While we wait for the new 2014 story to air take a look at these 2 "homemade" sceneries from previous years with hero MOCs placed in the different environments of the commercials.

The first picture shows a group of heroes waiting to be picked up on the jungle planet.

New book about LEGO and innovation

This is a very interesting book about LEGO and their innovation revolution and it has a whole chapter about BIONICLE.
I have given a couple of interviews for the book and there are a couple of untold secrets in there, enjoy:)
http://youtu.be/3-iefMePgYk

Below you see a outtake from the Amazon Q&A with the David Robertson. I think all BIONICLE fans can take that as a great tribute to their role in bringing LEGO back to being the best toy in the world:

Q. You call Bionicle the toy that saved LEGO, both in terms of financial impact and the lessons the company learned from it about innovation. Can you explain?
A. Bionicle was the toy that saved LEGO, even though it’s always been a controversial toy within the company. There are those in LEGO who still believe it’s not an appropriate toy to carry the LEGO brand. But without the revenues from Bionicle to carry them through the crisis years of 2003 and 2004, the company would not have survived.
But Bionicle also taught LEGO some lessons about how to work with external partners, how to interact with passionate customers, and how to manage an intellectual property. LEGO had seen from its partnership with Star Wars how a rich story can captivate kids and drive sales of toys. But making toys around someone else’s story is a different challenge than creating your own story and characters, and building toys around it. Bionicle boys loved the toy, and loved the T-shirts, books, comics, backpacks, sneakers, and everything else that had a Bionicle image on it. LEGO had to learn how to not only develop a toy with a rich story, but also work with a group of outside partners and bring them along as the story progressed. And by interacting with the fans online, Greg Farshtey, the guy in LEGO responsible for story and character development, could understand where the story was confusing or unclear and fix the issue in the next release.

Hero Factory Moc

I was asked if I could show any Hero Factory concept art but that is not possible yet. However I can show you what I am building in my spare time. The HF building system is fantastic. This moc is not part of any launch but just a freestyle character done for fun. Hope to bring you more later.

Barraki 2006 Teaser poster

“Welcome to the deep” was a statement that had a ironic twist because the creatures awaiting the heroes in the pit were like nothing we had ever seen before. They had organic shells and live squid amo and were ready for a warm welcome. So here they are all looking down at you as you awake from the impact with the seabed.

Vahki 2004 Teaser poster

The concept tag line was “Obey or Run” and these bad guys were no joke. They were the first transformable Bionicle characters with both 2-legs and 4-legs pose and radical design features.

2004 Movie teaser poster

This poster uses a very early concept drawing of how I first imagined Metru Nui. A very dark organic bio mechanical universe that was based on caves, tunnels and tubes.

Takanuva and Makuta 2003 posters

These 2 posters were done to really set up the epic battle between Takanuva and Makuta. This was a battle set by destiny and even the first letter of their logos were made to fit into each others negative shape.

Bionicle 2003 Teaser poster

This poster intended to foretell the prophecy of the 7th Toa. By showing the constellation of the 6 Toa shaping Mata Nui and the 7th Toa appearing as a comet in the centre. Jala is looking up into the night sky from the temple in the jungle trying to make sense of the events.

1 year of Faber Files

It is little over a year since I started the Faber Files and it has been great to hear all your feedback and get to show a little from behind the scenes of Bionicle and other stuff. As you may know we are currently very busy with the production of the 2014 special and that is like a dream come true. Hope that it continues right to the last frame is ready for premièring.
To celebrate the first year and soon post number 100 I will post a series of posters that was done as teasers and concept tests. Some were used and some served as inspiration.

Dream assignment with dream team

Here you see part of the reason why I havn't been posting so much lately. I'm concept developing and art directing the new 22 minutes film for Hero Factory 2014 together with the coolest team. It is a dream come true to get this assignment and teaming up with our good friends from Ghost for the 3D is just making it even sweeter. It has been a long time coming to make a longer format with this setup and finally we are here:) This is something you will hear much more about when possible so stay tuned.

2005 teaser poster

This year the Toa would get caught by the Visorak, cocooned and morphed into twisted versions of the former heroes. So I did this poster to hint at the sinister fate that was awaiting the heroes in Metru Nui.

Visorak design

Quite a few thoughts  went into the design of the visorak wire. This is the design sheet I used to brief Ghost before the animation started back in 2004.

The Ignition poem

To amp up the epic journey that the Toa set out on in 2006 to save the future of Mata Nui I tried to create a poem that held the coming 3 years of action in a few lines. Not giving away the plot but predicting the events that had to take place for the Toa to succeed. Below you see the lines and their translation.
Evil knows, that hope is afloat.
In translation: The Piraka knows that the MOL is on Voya Nui.

Where life is enslaved, all can be saved.
In translation: MOL and the Matoran are enslaved by the Piraka but the mask can change all that.

Light will unite, what now darkness divides.
In translation: The mask will show the way to the captured Matoran in the pit of Mahri Nui
Spark the flame of the heart, for the future to start.
In translation: Matoro wearing the Mask of life would dive into the core to restart the heart of Mata Nui.
